Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is Pilates?

Answer: Pilates is an exercise technique that was developed by Mr. Joseph Pilates in the early 1900's. As a student of yoga, gymnastics and other eastern/western philosophies of exercise, Mr. Pilates created techniques utilizing equipment that was modified from bunkbeds, springs, and trapezes to help fellow internees during WWI.

Pilates philosophies differ from others with a few key points:

  • Work the body from within, outward - particularly paying attention to the stabilization of the muscles in the trunk of the body.
  • The mind controls the movements
  • The coordination of the breath with the movement being performed
  • Postural alignment and symmetry of movement

Today, Pilates is recognized and made even more popular because of dancers, celebrities, athletes and models that give credit to Pilates for their strong, lean figures.
