Pilates Is...
Joseph H. Pilates
Founder of Pilates
(1880-1967)
Joseph Pilates developed a system of exercise in 1915, integrating Joseph Pilates studied Greek and Roman Gymnastics, Yoga, and Eastern and Western Philosophies. He immigrated to New York City in 1926 where his exercise techniques were embraced by dancers and gymnasts. His program utilizes specialized equipment and breathing techniques which promote life-long fitness. The exercises depend on excellent form and decrease stress on joints.

There are many “schools” of Pilates today. We incorporate floor, mat, and towel work, and utilize the Pilates equipment. The most important aspect of Pilates is Core Stabilization which provides the foundation for strength. Pilates increases flexibility and muscular strength without adding excessive bulk.

The focus of Pilates is to achieve the following items :

  • fluidity and awareness of movement
  • mental focus and control
  • a body that "thinks" for itself
  • a healthy body inside and out!
